Yoga is an ancient tradition that originated more than
2,000 years ago as a means by which humankind could live life in harmony
with the universe. Yoga is a holistic concept that unifies the physical,
mental and emotional aspects of the self so that the person who practices
it feels in total balance and in harmony with others as well as with
his or her environment.
Hatha is the type of yoga we practice in this class.
'Yoga' is a Sanskrit word which means union of mind body and soul. 'Hatha'
is a physical yoga; 'Ha' means the sun, which represents masculine energy
and 'tha' means the moon which represents feminine energy. Each person
has both energies within himself or herself and Hatha yoga teaches us
how to balance these energies.
The asanas (postures)
are held for as long as possible in order to build stamina as well as
alter the energy in the body. Twisting and turning the body forward,
backward and sideways stimulates all the nerves and internal organs and
unblocks the energy centres. Breathing correctly is a vital part of Hatha
yoga and increases the lung capacity, balances the masculine and feminine
energies and boosts energy levels as well as calming and soothing the
nervous system acting as a natural tranquilizer to make us feel calm
and relaxed.
